Question
These graphs show changes in the frequency of allele A1 over time 0.6- allele Al allele Al 0.4- 300 200 500 200 300 0.8- 0.6 alele Al allele A1 lele Al 0.4- 0.2- Four different biological situations are described below. The descriptions provide the starting frequencies of the alleles, and some information about the relative fitnesses of the genotypes. For each situation, select the ONE graph (A-F) that best describes the future change in A1 allele frequency that you would expect in each situation.Explanation / Answer
Case 1, When food is abundant and favorable growing conditions are present, a allele frequency (specifically A1A1 homozygotes and A1A2 heterozygotes) potentially increases in number from generation to generation. Growth is said to be geometric when each generation's increase is a constant percentage of the total population size. This is also known as exponential growth because the larger the population gets, the faster the allelic frequency grows. So, Graph D perfectly depicts the situation for future changes in allele frequency of A1.
In a resource-limited environment when a population becomes large, competition becomes more intense, mortality increases, the birth rate decreases. In such a situation, population stabilizes below carrying capacity and the allelic frequency will exhibit sigmoid growth curve which is depicted in Graph B.
Case 2, The starting frequency of A1 is 0.5. If you look at all the graphs, only in Graphs A and F, the starting point of the frequency of allele A1 is 0.5. Homozygous A1A1 plants have more productivity. So, the future change of the frequency of A1 will be in the decreasing order. Hence, Graph F perfectly depicts this situation.
Case 3, Homozygous A1A1 are least able to regulate the salt. So, the future change of the frequency of A1 will be in the decreasing order. Hence, Graph A perfectly depicts this situation.
Case 4, The starting frequency of A1 is 0.8. If you look at all the graphs, only in Graph C, the starting point of the frequency of allele A1 is 0.8. Besides, The A1A1 homozygotes being tan, have lower success at finding mates. Hence the future change of the frequency of A1 will be in the decreasing order. Hence, Graph C perfectly depicts this situation.
