\"The treatment of short stature with pituitary-derived human growth hormone (hG

Question

"The treatment of short stature with pituitary-derived human growth hormone (hGH) began in the 1950s and has been associated with more than 238 iCJD cases to date. The majority of hGH-CJD cases have occurred in France, specifically among patients who received hGH treatment between December 1983 and July 1985 (119 cases in 1170 exposed patients). In the UK and the US, the numbers of cases are fewer (75 and 31, respectively). Except for 1 case of CJD associated with commercially derived hGH, 30 of the 31 patients in the US cases received hGH treatment through the government-supported National Hormone and Pituitary Program. In this program, no CJD cases have been identified among recipients who began their hormone treatment after 1977, the year when a highly selective column chromatography step was included in the purification protocol. The mean incubation time for hGH-CJD patients worldwide has been estimated to be 17 years (range 5–42 years), and the associated clinical picture is predominantly cerebellar, with dementia occurring late in the development should it appear." Given the above passage and your readings, which of the following statements is most likely true? Select ALL that apply for credit.

A. The 31 cases in the US of CJD are most likely sporadic CJD

B. These findings support the idea that hGH can take on a prion infective form

C. The supply of hGH in France was likely tainted with prions that resulted in about 10% of exposed patients getting the disease

D. The hGH was likely derived from a source of humans with CJD

E. These cases of CJD are likely due to exposure to contaminated surgical equipment originally used on diseased individuals

F. Expressivity in these hGH-CJD patients is very similar with all developing the typical disease traits of cerebellar degeneration and dementia
