Question

Please complete the problems showing all calculations and equations on which you base your answers. Use -9.8 m/s2 as the value for the acceleration due to gravity.

Please be advised this is for biomechanics class. Thank you in advance. :)

A baseball is struck by a bat 48 cm from the bat's axis of rotation when she bat's angular velocity is 4000 deg/sec. Assume that the ball leaves bat with the same linear velocity as the contact point of the bat. If the ball is hit at a height 1.0 m above the ground at a 50 degree angle above the horizontal, with the ball clear the outfield fence which is 2 m. in height, at a horizontal distance 108 m. form the point of ball contact with the ball? (hint: this is multi part problem)

Explanation / Answer

4000 degree /sec = 69.8 rad/sec

v = rw = 0.48 x 69.8 = 33.5 m/s

t = 2(v)(sin(theta))/g = 2*33.5*sin(50)/9.81 = 5.23 s

R = v^2 (sin 2*theta)/g = (35.5m/s)^2 (sin 2*45)/9.81m/s^2 = 128.5m
The projectile will only travel 128.5 m, 20.5 m from horizontal distance

(g = acceleration due to gravity; t = total flight time; theta = given angle of 50 degrees)
