Question

The figure shows a potential energy curve for the interaction of two neutral atoms. The two-atom system is in a vibrational state indicated by the heavy solid horizontal line.

The figure shows a potential energy curve for the interaction of two neutral atoms. The two-atom system is in a vibrational state indicated by the heavy solid horizontal line. 0.2 eV -0.4 eV -0.6 eV 0.8 eV 1.0 eV 1.2 eV 1.4 eV 1.6 eV (a) At r = r1, what are the approximate values of the kinetic energy K, the potential energy U, and the quantity K+U? ev ev eV (b) What minimum (positive) amount of energy must be supplied to cause these two atoms to separate? eV

Explanation / Answer

here,

Part A:
Vale of K should be vale at where dotted line intersect - energy value at constant constant line

K = (1.3 - 0.2) = 1.1 ev

U = -1.3 eV

E = K + U = 1.1 - 1.3 = -0.2 eV

Part b:
the minimum amount of erngy must be supplied to cause these two atoms to separate is where the interaction energy is zero.

so we add 0.2 eV to vibration state to make interation or Energy equal to Zero.
