Py211 Spr2016 60855851 2016 PY 211 Exercise 848 Y211 28 Exercise 8.46 Part A Find the magnitude of the final velocity of the 0.157 kg glider. A 0.157 kg glder is moving to the right on a fictionless 157 kg horirortal t has a head- air track with a on colison with a 0 299 kg glider that is moving to the left with speed of 224m/s Suppose he colson is elasto on colison Suppose he m/s My Answers Give up Part B Find the direction of the Snal velocity of the 0.157 kg glider to the right · tothe left My. Answers Give Up Correct Part C Find the magnitude of the final velocity of the 0.299 kg glider

Explanation / Answer

the glider with mass m1 =0.157kg is moving to right, lets say along the positive x direction, and the glider with mass m2 = 0.299 kg is moving to right, along the negative x direction. Now to find the velocities of these 2 gliders, we use the equations corresponding to elastic collision,

v1f = [(m1-m2)/(m1+m2)](-v1) + [2m2/(m1+m2)](-v2)                          (1)

v2f = [2m1/(m1+m2)](-v1) + [(m2-m1)/(m1+m2)](-v2)                          (2)

a) to calculate the velocity of 0.157kg glider, we use equation (1) and upin substituting the values , we get

v1f = -2.67m/s , where the negative sign denotes that the 0.157kg glider moves along negative x-axis after collision

c) to calculate the velocity of 0.299kg glider, we use equation (2) and upin substituting the values , we get

v2f = -1.267m/s , where the negative sign denotes that the 0.299kg glider continues to move along negative x-axis after collision
