Question
please refer to the geological time scale and to the strata to answer all the questions
Geologic Time Scale Era System & Period Series&Epach Some Distinctive Features Years Before Present Quarternary 11,000 1/2 to 2 million First abundant Z Tertiary modern types of mammals. 58+ 2 million First placental mammals First flowering plants; climax of dinosaurs and ammonites, followed 63+2 million Cretaceous 135+5 million Tertiary extinction O Jurassic First bird, first mammals dinosaurs and ammonites abundant First dinosaurs. Abundant cycads and conifers. 181+5 million Triassic 230+ 10 million Extinction of most kinds of marine Permian animals, including trilobites. 280+10 million Pennsylvanian Great coal forests, conifers First reptiles 310+10 million Sharks and amphibians abundant. Large and numerous scale trees and Mississippian 345+10 miltion seed ferns. Devonian 405+10 million fishes abundant. Silurian First terrestrial plants and animals. 425+10 million 500 + 10 million First fishes; invertebrates dominant. First abundant record of marine life; trilobites dominant. 600+50 million Fossils extremely rare, consisting of primitive aquatic plants. Evidence of glaciation. Oldest dated algae, over 2,600 million years; oldest dated meteorites 4,500 million years Table 2.1: Geologic time scale Procedure Using the geologic time scale, answer the following questions. 1. During what era and period did the frst flowering plants appear? 2. During what era and period did the first vascular plants, such as ferns, appear? 070 17 Exercise 2 Evolutionary ObservationsExplanation / Answer
4. Mesozoic era
Question B
1. Stratum A is the oldest because it has the remains of sea jelly. And straum E is newest as it contains skull of human. The deeper the remains of an organism are found the older it is, as the soil keeps on depositing over the dead and with time it goes deeper.
2. The stratum B would be older than 280+10 million years ago as trilobite got extincted after that, so there skeleton can not be buried after that. It can be anywhere between 600 million years to 280 million years old .
3. Stratum D dinosaur.
Stratum C primitive amphibian
Because dinosaur evolved after amphibians and newer skeletons are found in upper strata. The older the fossil is, the deeper it would be present in soil.
4. Stratum D because first flowering plants originated at the time of extinction of dinosaur. So remains of flowering plants will start from the place where most superficial dinosaur skeleton is found.
5. Era paleozoic
Period- carboniferous
Epoch- Mississippian (primitive amphibian)
