Question
Build a dichotomous key to all the tissues you have seen in the lab. For this, you can use any of their morphological characteristics (under the microscope) but not their physiological functions.
Tissues seen in this lab:
1) Epithelia: simple squamous, simple cuboidal, simple columnar, pseudostratified columnar, stratified squamous, stratified cuboidal and columnar, transitional, and specialized epithelia (goblet cells).
2) Connective Tissue: Adipose, Areolar, Cartilage, hyaline cartilage, fibrocartilage, elastic cartilage, bone and blood.
3) Muscle: Smooth muscles, Cardiac muscles, skeletal muscle
4) Nervous tissues: Neurons, central nervous system (CNS), satellite cells, schwann cells, ependymal cell
Explanation / Answer
Dichotomous key of tissues according to their morphological characters are shown as below:
1) Epithelial:
Simple squamous - plasma membrane and nucleus
Simple cuboidal - basement membrane and nucleus
Simple columnar - basement membrane and globet cells
Stratified squamous - stratum corneum and stratum basale
Pseudo stratified columnar - Column
stratified cuboidal - cube
columnar - cube
transitional-cube
specialised epithelia - globet cells
2) connective tissue :
Adipose - nucleus, adipocytes and fat storage vacuoles
Areolar - ground substance, collagen bundles and elastic fibers
Hyaline cartilage - lacunae, chondrocytes and ground substance
Fibrosis cartilage - collagen bundles, lacunae and chondrocytes
Elastic cartilage - perichondrium ,elastic fibres, lacunae and chondrocytes
Bone - lamella, calaniculi, central canal ,lacunae and osteocytes
Blood- red blood cells ,white blood cells, platelets and plasma
3) Muscle :
Smooth muscle - nucleus
Cardiac muscle - striations, nucleus and intercalated disc
Skeletal muscle -striations and nucleus
4) Nervous tissue :
Neurons, central nervous system, satellite cells ,schwann cells, ependymal cells: These all contains nucleus, soma and cell processes.
So according to these morphological characters, dichotomous key builds.
