Question
A position-time graph for a particle moving along the x axis is shown in the figure. The divisions along the horizontal axis represent 1.0 s and the divisions along the vertical axis represent 3.0 m.
(a) Find the average velocity in the time interval t = 3.0 s to t = 8.0 s.
(b) Determine the instantaneous velocity at t = 4.0 s (where the tangent line touches the curve) by measuring the slope of the tangent line shown in the graph.
(c) At what value of t is the velocity zero?
please show the answer and how you got it. as well as units.
Explanation / Answer
a) average velocity = total distance travelled / time taken = (6*3.0)/5.0 = 3.6 m/s
b) instantaneous velocity = slope of the curve = dx/dt = -(6*3.0)/4.0 = -4.5 m/s
c) velocity = 0 => slope of the curve = dx/dt = 0
so at t=8.0 s velocity = 0
