Question
A group of scientists working for Company Y want to test a new chemical that they believe will act as a sunscreen sunburn. The same amount of lotion is applied to each person in the same size area and the test subject's arm is exposed to direct sunlight. The amount of redness is measured every S min for a total of 30 min. For each person tested, 3 different lotions are applied to the test subjeet's arm: I. a lotion with the new sunscreen chemical called SunX Il. a lotion with a different active sunscreen chemical that the company currently sells successfully called Sun Kissed a lotion that has all the same ingredients as the sunscreens, except it has no active sunscreen chemical III. 27. What question is being asked in the experiment above? 28. What hypothesis is being tested in the experiment described above? Read entire description above carefully! A. A hypothesis must be testable and falsifiable. Is the hypothesis you wrote above testable? Explain. B. Is the hypothesis you wrote above falsifiable? Explain. 29. What is the prediction based on this hypothesis? (Remember a prediction is written as an "If 30. A. What is the independent variable in this experiment? Why?Explanation / Answer
the question asked in the above experiment is which of the lotions is the best to avoid sun induced redness of skin , of the three ones which we have. The hypothesis tested above is that does the active chemical act against sunlight caused redness and is it better than the old molecule? A testable hypothesis means it can be proved by testing and data collection and in our case we are testing the three molecules by comparing and recording the redness on the subjects arms after 5 minutes of every 30 mins of sun exposure . Falsifiable means that our hypothesis can be proven wrong and ours can be because not all people react to sun in the same way and for the same amount of exposure to sunlight different people can react in different severity. If the new molecule is better than Sun kissed molecule and plain lotion then redness will be less in the subjects to whom this is applied compared to the other two. Similarly subjects who have had sun kissed applied should have less redness compared to those who have had no sunscreen. The independent variable in a hypothesis is the one which we change to see the effects and in this case it is the chemical which is applied of the three.
