Explanation / Answer

Current in left most branch is i1 and current in right most branch is i2

Current in middle branch, i = 53 m A = 0.053 A

Applying kirchhoff's loop rule for left loop,

i1 R - i (1.5 ) = - E+ (1.00 V )

(3.85 ) i1 - 1.5*( 0.053 A) = - E + 1.00

3.85 i1 -0.0795-1= - E

3.85 i1 - 1.0795 = - E

3.85 i1 + E = 1.0795

By applying loop rule for right loop,

- i2(1.00 ) - i2( 2.85 ) + (1.5 )(0.053 A) = (1.20 V ) + E

              - 3.85i2 + 0.0795 - 1.2 = E

                           - 3.85 i2 - E = 1.1205

Solve the above two equations:

3.85 i1 - 3.85 i2 = 2.2

at the middle branch junction, apply junction rule,

                        i1 + i2 + i = 0

                      i2 = - 0.053 - i1

so, the current i1 is,

  3.85 i1 - 3.85 [ - 0.053 - i1  ]= 2.2

i1 = 0.259 A

therefore, current i2 is,

                                   i2 = - 0.053 - i1

                                      = -0.053 - 0.259

= -0.312 A

Here, negative sign indicates the current flows from right to left.

so, current is, 0.312 A

the emf is, 3.85(0.259) + E = 1.0795

   E = 0.08235 V

= 0.082 V
