Moving to the next question prevents changes to this answer. Question 3 of5 Question 3 1 points A student is given five samples and told they are lysine (an amino acid), lactose (a disaccharide), insulin (a protein hormone RNA and tat. The samples are in test tubes marked 15, but the student doesn't know which compound is in which tube. The student is instructed to identify the contents of each tube. Base on these data, identify what is in each tube in her first test, she tries to hydrolyze a portion of the contents of each tube. Hydrolysis occurs in all tubes except tube 3. In the next test, she finds that tubes 1, 2, and 3 are positive for nitrogen but only tube 2 gives a positive result for the presence of sulfur In the next test the student shows that the compound in tube 1 contains a high percentage of phosphate In the final test the student shows that compound 5 is hydrophobic Base on these data, identify what is in each tube A fat B. lysine C. insulin D lactose E. RNA Question 3 of 5 to this answer A Moving to the next question prevents Type here to searcExplanation / Answer
In the first test, it was Clear that only one compound does not undergo hydrolysis whereas all the other compounds undergo hydrolysis. From this we can assume that all the compounds are Polymers except one which is not hydrolysed. So among lysine, lactose, Insulin, RNA and Fat: Lysine is the Amino acid which is a monomer and further cannot be splitted in the process of hydrolysis. Hence this test tube contains Lysine. According to this Hydrolysis Test, test tube 3 contains Lysine.
In the second test, the tubes 1, 2 and 3 gives positive for Nitrogen. That means among these five samples Protein (insulin), Amino acid (lysine) and nucleic acid (RNA) contains Nitogen whereas Fat and Lactose donot contain Nitogen. When she performed Sulfur test only the sample in the test tube 2 gives positive indication this means, it contains Insulin beacuse only a complete protein has sulphur. So, as we see the chemical composition of insulin it contains carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur. Hence, the sample in the test tube 2 is Insulin.
In the third test, it was clear that test tube 1 contains high percentage of phosphate. This means among the five compounds only one sample containing phosphate that too in high content is RNA (nucleic acid). From this phosphate test, the results show that the test tube 1 contains RNA.
In the final test, that is hydrophobicity test it was clear that, only one sample is hydrophobic. Among all the given compounds only fats are hydrophobic, as they are a type of lipids which have the inability to mix with water. Hence fats are hydrophobic. This suggests that the test tube 5 contains Fat.
By above all the tests, the four compounds were identified in different test tubes and only one compound is left that is Lactose in the test tube 4. Hence by eliminating the above the compounds the test tube 4 contains Lactose.
finally,
