Question

An astronaut (145 kg including space suit) is on a space capsule (1600 kg). The astronaut pushes off using her hands and acquires a speed of 2.75 m/s. (Use the frame of reference as that of the capsule before the push-off.) Draw two labeled diagrams (include coordinate system) - one before and one after the push-off. Determine the velocity of the space capsule after the push-off. If the push lasts 0.350 s, determine the average force that the astronaut exerted on the capsule. Determine the kinetic energy of the astronaut after the push-off. Determine the impulse on the astronaut.

Explanation / Answer

A) After push off , astronaut will be in + X direction and space capsule will be in - X direction .

B)   velocity of space capsule = (145 * 2.75)/1600

                                                 = 0.2492 m/sec

C)    average force = (1600 * 0.2492)/0.350

                                = 1139.2 N

D)   kinetic energy of astronaut = 0.5 * 145 * 2.75 * 2.75

                                                  = 548.28 J

E) impulse on astronaut = 145 * 2.75

                                         = 398.75 N-sec
