Question

Express your answer using two significant figures. Calculate the acceleration of each box and the tension at each end of the cord, using the free-body diagrams shown in the figure (Figure 1). Assume -E_p =35.0 N, and ignore sagging of the cord. Caption: Free-body diagrams for each of the objects of the system shown in the figure. Vertical forces, F_n and F_G are not shown. Express your answer using two significant figures. Suppose two boxes on a frictionless table are connected by a heavy cord of mass 1.0 kg. Express your answer using two significant figures.

Explanation / Answer

A.

there is only one force which is accelerating, that is Fp

So using newton's second law:

Force = mass*acceleration

Fp = Total mass*a

a = Fp/Mt = 35/(12 + 1 +10)

a = 1.521 m/sec^2

all the acceleration will be same, so

aA = aB = aC = 1.521 m/sec^2

B.

Now on the left box using force balance

FBT = mB*aB

FBT = 12*1.521 = 18.252 N

this force will be equal to the force FTB

C.

using force balance on rope

FAT - FTB = mC*aC

FAT = FTB + mC*aC

FAT = 18.252 + 1*1.521 = 19.773 N

this force will be equal to the force FTA
