Question
A 140 lb female is exercising at an intensity of 40% of their VO2max, which was determined by indirect calorimetry to be 58 ml/kg/min. At this intensity, her RER was measured to be 0.85. A) What is her metabolic rate? B) What is her exercise intenisty in METS? Name two activites that roughly approximate to this exercise intensity? C) If she exercised at this intensity for an hour, how many total calories would she expend? D) What % of calories expened in that hour were from carbohydrate oxidation as opposed to fat oxidation? E) What is directly measured in order to obtain RER?
We were not given height and weight because you can calculate the Metabolic rate with LO2/min x 5kcal/ 1LO2. However I don't know how to get to that point with 58 ml/kg/min. Resting VO2 = 0.25 L/min or 3.5 ml/kg/min. We were NOT given height.
Explanation / Answer
Given
Wt = 140 lbs = 63.5kg
RER while exercising = 0.85
VO2max = 58ml/kg/min
VO2 = .4 * VO2max
= .4 * 58ml/kg/min
= 23.2 ml/kg/min
= 1.4732 l/min [after multiplying with wt= 63.5kg to simlify units]
Derived
a)Rate of energy expenditure = CV*VO2
= 4.862 * 1.4732 = 7.161 kcal/min
b) Determining MET for this exercise = energy exenditure* 200 / 3.5 *wt(kg)
= 7.161 * 200 / 3.5 * 63.5
= 6.4 MET
c) Activities: ballet, american football
d) Calories burned after 2 hours = MET while exercise * met at rest * min
= 6.4 *1.1 * 120 = 852. 4 kcal
