Question

An experiment that can be used to measure the velocity of a bullet is to have cardboard disks attached to a rotating shaft some distance apart and to measure the angular separation of the holes made by the bullet. In such an experiment, two cardboard disks are placed 0.534 m apart on a shaft that is rotating at 3000 rpm. The bullet is fired parallel to the axis and the angular separation of the holes is measured to be 22.0 degrees. The speed of the bullet is 37 m/s. True or false? Explanation / Answer

After being one hole in first disc, the bullet will reach disc 2 for second hole traveling a distance 0.534 m, meanwhile the disc will rotate 22° angle in the same time interval at 3000rpm. Calculation of time to rotate 22° will give us 1.222 ×10^ -3 sec as 3000×360/60 = 18000 degree per second. For 22° time will be 22/18000.

Hence speed of bullet will be distance by bullet devide by that calculated time. Hence speed is 436.9 m/sec.

Hence statement is false
