Question
For the following questions give the complete name and standard unit, of the quantity asked for. (Example: In the formula V = kq/r, the name of V 'Electric Potential', and the standard unit of V is Volts.) In the formula lambda/2 pi epsilon_0 r what is the name and standard unit of lambda? In the formula Phi_B = integral B middot dA what is the name and standard unit of Phi_B? In the formula mu = NIA what is the name and standard unit of mu? In the formula J = sigma E what is the name and standard unit of J? In the formula tau = RC what is the name and standard unit of tau? For each of the following situations, determine the direction (clockwise, or counterclockwise) of the induced current in the rectangular loop of wire. What type of energy transformation occurs in an electric motor? What type of energy transformation occurs in an electric generator? In class one day we saw a demonstration where a flat sheet of aluminum was hanging vertically by some strings. The aluminum sheet was released and swung down between the poles of a strong magnet. Describe the motion of the aluminum sheet as it swung down and passed between the poles of the magnet? Briefly but accurately explain why the rectangular sheet moved as it did when it passed between the poles of the magnet. A parallel plate capacitor is made of two square conducting plates placed a distance of 1.50 mm apart. The length of the side of each plate is 4.00 cm. The capacitor carries a charge of 25.00 mu C. For the following questions, be sure to leave all your answers in standard units! What is the capacitance of the capacitor? What is the potential difference between the plates of the capacitor? What is the magnitude of the electric field between the plates of the capacitor? A proton is released from rest at the surface of the positively charged plate. What magnitude force does the proton experience? What is the speed of the proton when it reaches the negatively charged plate?Explanation / Answer
ANS 1)part a is the linear charge density ,it is defined as q/l so unit is Cm-1
part b) is the magnetic flux and unit is Wb
part c) is the magnetic moment and its unit is Am2
part d) j is the current density and its unit is Am-2
part e) is the time constant or the capacitive time constant and its unit is sec
ANS 2) a) is the case 1 magnetic field due to current carrying wire on the lopp will be inwards and into the plane of paper,as the rectangular loop is moving away from it,so mgnetic flux will decrease and hance according to the right hand thumb rule, direction of current will be clockwise.
b)magnetic field due to current carrying wire on the loop is outward and out of the plane of paper, and since i is decreasing so the direction of current in the loop will be Anticlockwise.
C) as the loop is rotating as shown ,the area of the loop will decrease and magnetic field on the loop due to current carrying wire is inwards and inside the plane of paper, therfore direction of curren will be clockwise.
ANS 3) in electric motors electrical energy is converted into mechanical energy.
In electric generators converts any form of mechanical energy ino electrical energy
ANS 4) a) When the aluminum sheet moves between the poles of the magnet, eddy currents are established in the aluminum. According to Lenz’s law, these currents are in a direction so as to oppose the original change, which is the movement of the aluminum sheet in the magnetic field.
b) a rectangular coil placed inside the magnetic poles of magnet experienced a torque =IBA sin
where is the angle which normal drawn on the plane of coil makes with the direction of magnetic field,so due to this torque the coil rotates.
