Question

Refer to the picture on the right. A stamp is placed to the left of the lens, and its image is formed on a screen to the right of the lens, as shown. Choose the correct answer for each question. 28. Suppose the top half of the lens is temporarily covered by a piece of paper (only for this question) so that no light can pass through this portion. Which is true? A. Half of the image will disappear. B. The image will be whole but half as large, C. The image will disappear. D. The image will be dimmer. E. The image will appear on the paper. F. The image will be unchanged. G. None of these is correct. 29. Suppose a circular piece of black tape temporarily covers the center of the lens (only for this question) as shown on the right. Which is true? A. The center of the image will disappear. B. The image will be whole but smaller. C. The image will disappear. D. The image will be dimmer. E. The image will appear on the tape. F. The image will be unchanged. G. None of these is correct. 30. Suppose half of the stamp is temporarily covered by a piece of paper (only for this question). What happens to the image of the stamp? A. Half of the image will disappear, B. The image will be whole but half as large. C. The image will disappear. D. The image will be dimmer, E. The image will appear on the paper, F. The image will be unchanged, G. None of these is correct.

Explanation / Answer

28 D

Each part of the lens contributes to make an image although we use two primary waves to sketch the images at our lessons. Thus the uncovered part will create a complete image but the energy of the incident ray is now reducedfue to reflection fromthe closed half. Thus the image is dimmer.

29.D

Same as explained above. It doesn't matter where the lens is covered in determining the position of the image and hence the magnification. Only the energy will be affected.

30. A

The covered part of the stamp will not provide distinguishable incident rays to the lens. Thus the object is only half of the stamp. Thus the image would be that half available.
