Question

In no more than 4 sentences, explain WHY using a real image created by a converging lens works to help measure the focal length of a diverging lens indirectly. Diagram below:

i2 01 02 DIVERGING LENS OBJECT IMAGE 2 (on the screen) CONVERGING LENS Image 1 FIGURE 4 - Two lens set-up . Measure the distance from the object to the converging lens, dol o Measure the distance from the converging lens to the diverging lens, d o Measure the distance from the diverging lens to the screen, di2 o Measure the height of the image, hi o The first thing you need to do is calculate the image distance, di, for the converging lens. See Image 1 in Figure 4. This is the image that would form if the diverging lens weren't there, that's why it's grayed out in Figure 4. Using your dol and the average focal length for the converging lens (from the first part of the lab), calculate dil

Explanation / Answer

Because converging lens forms a real image (which can be obtained on screen ) which acts as an objects for the diverging lens and the position of screen chages which helps in measuring the focal length of the diverging lens. Instead if we use only diverging lens we can't get virtual image on screen.
