Question

I have a physics test tmrw, this is the practice test. I understand how to set up the problems, I just don't know where to start. If someone could work it out and label step by step where to start and what to do.

1. A boat travels 80 kilometers straight west following a straight shoreline road, in two hours time. The boat then turns 30° north and travels for 10 kilometers in thirty minutes. The boat then turns 15° further north and travels 20 kilometers in 1 hour.

a. What is the net displacement of the boat from its point of origin?

b. What is the average velocity of the boat relative to its average displacement?

c. What is the average speed of the boat (relative to its motion) during the entire 3 hour and 30 minute trip?

d. A car driving west along the along the seaside road paces the boat staying parallel with it for the 3 hour and 30 minute trip.  What is the average velocity of the car?

Explanation / Answer

a)   displacement to 30° north = sqrt(802 + 102 + 2 * 80 * 10 * cos150)

                                                   = 71.51 km

=>    net displacement of the boat from its point of origin =   sqrt(71.512 + 202 + 2 * 71.51 * 20 * cos165)

                                                                                       =   52.44 km

b)    average velocity of the boat =   52.44 /(3.5)

                                                      = 14.98 km/hr

c)    average speed of the boat   =    110 /(3.5)

                                                    = 31.428 km/hr

d)    the average velocity of the car =   14.98 km/hr
