Question
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the United States generated approximately 4.12×1012 kWh of electrical energy during 2010. If we could generate all this energy using a matter-antimatter reactor, how many kilograms of fuel would the reactor need, assuming 100% efficiency in the annihilation?
Answer to this first one is 1.65x10^2kg
Now what is the answer to the second one?
Suppose the fuel consisted of lead and anti-lead, each of density 11300 kg/m3. If the lead and anti-lead were each stored as a cubical pile, what would the side-length of each cube be?
Explanation / Answer
Here ,
energy produced = 4.12 *10^12 kWh
energy produced = 4.12 * 10^12 * 3600 * 1000 J
Let the mass needed is m
energy produced = m * c^2
4.12 * 10^12 * 3600 * 1000 = m * (3 *10^8)^2
m = 165 Kg
the mass used is 165 Kg
density of lead , p = 11300 Kg/m^3
volume of cube = mass/density
a^3 = 165/11300
a = 0.244 m
the length of each cube is 0.244 m
