Question
A thin, double convex lens having a focal length of magnitude 22.5 cm is placed 1.000 m from a plane mirror that is oriented perpendicular to the principal axis of the lens. A flower, 8.40 cm tall, is 1.450 m from the mirror on the principal axis of the lens. (Provide the final image position with respect to the mirror.)
(a) Where is the final image of the flower produced by the lens–mirror combination? Is it real or virtual? Upright or inverted? How tall is the image? dI, B = cm hI = cm
(b) If the convex lens is replaced by a double concave lens having a focal length of the same magnitude as the original lens, what will be the answers to part (a)? dI, B = cm hI = cm
Explanation / Answer
a) For lens image
=> 1/v = 1/22.5 - 1/45
=> v = 45 cm
=> final image of the flower produced by the lens–mirror combination = 55 cm to the right of mirror
=> image is virtual and inverted .
=> tall is the image = 8.40 cm
b) For lens image
=> 1/v = -1/22.5 - 1/45
=> v = - 15 cm
=> final image of the flower produced by the lens–mirror combination = 115 cm to the left of mirror
=> image is virtual and erect .
=> tall is the image = 2.8 cm
