Question
A player passes a basketball to another player who catches it at the same level from which it was thrown. The initial speed of the ball is 7.3 m/s , and it travels a distance of 4.1 m.
A.) What was the initial direction of the ball? (more than one answer, separate by comma)
B.)What was its time of flight? (more than one answer, separate by comma)
For A.) I got 20 degress and B.) 0.59 s. but mastering physics says that there is two answers for each part and I don't know how to find them. Please help!
Explanation / Answer
initial velocity of the ball (u) = 7.3 m/s
Range (R) = [ u2 sin(2) ] /g = 4.1 m where is angle of inclination from horizantal at catching heigth
[ 7.32 sin(2) ] / 9.81 = 4.1 m
sin(2) = 0.7547 ......... but sin(2) = 2 sin() cos() = 2 cos(90-) sin(90-) since sin() = cos(90-)
or 2 = sin-1(0/7547) = 490
= 24.50 or 90 - 24.5 = 65.50
A) 24.50 and 65.50 initial direction
Time of flight ( T ) = [2 u sin()] / g
For = 24.50
T = [ 2 x 7.3 x sin(24.5) ] / 9.81
T = 0.6172 s
For = 65.50
T = [ 2 x 7.3 x sin(65.5) ] / 9.81
T = 1.354 s
B) Time of flight is 0.6172 s and 1.354 s
I don't know how you ended up with 200 angle
