Question
You have introduced a series of mutations in mice that impair synaptonemal complex (SC) formation during prophase I of meiosis. The mutations do not affect pre-synaptic pairing or attachment of telomeres to the nuclear membrane and bouquet formation. However, transmission electron microscopy detected no remnants of the SC, Holliday junctions between homologous chromosomes were unstable, crossovers maturation was abolished, and structural integrity of chromosomes was drastically impaired. In addition, the mice were infertile. Propose a hypothesis to explain these observations. (5 points)Explanation / Answer
Hypothesis : the synatonemal complex is not affect the formation of holiday junction but rather hold the homologous chromosomes once the non-sister chromatids have formed the holiday junction. This would be essential to give sufficient time for the exchange of genetic material to occur between the 2 homologous chromosomes.
