Question
5. In the figure at the above right the electric field is everywhere in the x-direction and independent of y z. However, it does depend on x and in the plane x =0 it has the value E = 500 N/C. (a) What is the electric through the surface I? (b) Through surface II? (c) Through surface opposite I if there is a total positive charge 36.6 nC within the volume of the rectangular solid shown? (d) Is the electric field produced only by charges within the slab, or is it also due to charges outside the slab? How do you know?Explanation / Answer
A) Electric flux through I is Phi_1 = E*A*cos(0) = E*A = 500*15 = 7500 N/m^2/C
B) through surface II is phi_2 = E*A*cos(90) = 0
C) through surface opposite I is phi_3 = q_inside/eo = (36.6*10^-9)/(8.85*10^-12) = 4135.6
D) According to gauss law that electric filed is also due to the out side charges along with inside charges
