Question
Three point charges are located on a circular arc as shown in the figure below. (Take r = 4.20 cm. Let to the right be the +x direction and up along the screen be the +y direction.)
(a) What is the total electric field at P, the center of the arc?
E= .................. i+ ......................
(b) Find the electric force that would be exerted on a -4.58–nC point charge placed at P
F=.................... i+ ....................
Explanation / Answer
let q1 = q2 = 3 nC
q3 = -2 nc
electric filed due to upper and lower charges, E1 = E2 = k*q1/r
= 9*10^9*3*10^-9/0.042
= 642.86 N/c
E1x = E2x = E1*cos(30)
= 642.86*cos(30)
= 556.73 N/c
Y- componets of E1 and E2 are cancelled.
E3 = k*q3/r
= 9*10^9*2*10^-9/0.042
= 428.57 N/c
E3x = 428.57 N/v
E3y = 0
Enet = E1x + E2x - E3x
= 556.73 + 556.73 - 428.57
= 684.89 N/c ( towards +x axis)<<<<<<<-----------Answer
b) F = q*Enet
= 4.58*10^-9*684.89
= 3.14*10^-6 N (towards -x axis)<<<<<<<-----------Answer
