Question

Help please, could you explain it plesee ?

A car travels along a straight line at a constant speed of 41.0 mi/h for a distance dand then another distance d in the same direction at another constant speed. The average velocity for the entire trip is 26.0 mi/h.

(a) What is the constant speed with which the car moved during the second distance d?
mi/h

(b) Suppose the second distance d were traveled in the opposite direction; you forgot something and had to return home at the same constant speed as found in part (a). What is the average velocity for this trip?
mi/h

(c) What is the average speed for this new trip?

Explanation / Answer

let the other constant speed is v mi/h

Now,

avergae speed = total distance/total time taken

avergae speed = 2d/(d/v + d/41)

26 = 2/(1/v + 1/41)

solving for v

v = 19.04 mi/hour

the constant speed with which the car moved during the second distance is 19.04 mi/hour

c)

for the distance in oposite direction,

as distance is a scalar quantity ,

the average speed will be same as for case a

average speed = 26 mi/hr

c)

the average speed for this new trip is 19.04 mi/hr
