QUESTION 1 2 points Which characterjstic of a cell most influences the rate of movement of materials into and out of the cell Save An QUESTION 2 2 points As the size of a cell (or organism) increases, what happens to the surface area to volume ratio? O increases O decreases QUESTION 3 2 points In class, we discussed many examples of why a high surface area to volume ration is an advantage to organisms. In which of these e area to volume ratio be a disadvantage? fish gills in water with low levels of dissolved oxygen O mammal outer surface in a very cold environment plant leaves in a shaded forest understoryExplanation / Answer
Ans.1 Surface area is to volume ratio influences the rate of movement of substances in and out of cell. As diffusion rates are very high due to large surfave area. When the cell increases in size, the volume increases faster than the surface area, because volume is cubes where surface area is squared.
When there is more volume and less surface area, diffusion takes longer and is less effective. This is because there is a greater area that needs to receive the substance being diffused, but less area for that substance to actually enter the cell.
Ans.2 As the size if cell increases the surface area is to volume ratio decreases because as size increases the increment in volume is more than surface area so overall surface area is to volume ratio decreases.
Ans.3 It will be disadvantage to mammals whose outer surface have very high surface area to volume ratio in cold environment because of rapid heat loss. An organism that has larger surface area has high heat gain and heat loss. Therefore they need to eat or acquire nutrients faster in order to sustain life.
