Question

2) (6 points) According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (3/1/2016), the 10 most important public health problems are: Alcohol-related harms Food safety Healthcare-associated infectionsPrescription drug overdose Heart disease and stroke HIV Motor vehicle injury Nutrition, physical activity, and obesity Teen pregnancy Tobacco use For this question, you will create a short survey for an issue in public health. It may be one of the issues listed above, or another issue of your choosing. a) (1 point) State your research question or research objective. In short, explain who is in the population and what are you studying b) (1 point) Write out one question that you could use in a survey to collect categorical data from subjects enrolled in your study. Make sure to write the question and the possible responses for the subjects to choose from. (1 point) Write out one question that you could use in a survey to collect dichotomous data from subjects enrolled in your study. Make sure to write the question and the possible responses for the subjects to choose from. (1 point) Write out one question that you could use in a survey to collect ordinal data from subjects enrolled in your study. Make sure to write the question and the possible responses for the subjects to choose from. c) d) (2 points) Discuss why the questions you've provided in b, c, and d relate to your research question or research objective. (Hint: This is your justification as to why you would include these questions in your survey,) e)

Explanation / Answer

(a)

AIM: To study the dietary composition and exercise habits amongst a large population and correlate them with metabolic health indicators.

The sample size will consist of 1000 individuals across all age groups. The sample will have near equal number of males and females and equal number of individuals in each age group. The age group will be taken from age 15 to 95 with intervals of 10 years. The study will take into account the diet composition, amount and type of physical activity and metabolic indicators like blood glucose levels, waist to hip circumference ratio, BMI, cardiovascular health factors into account. The data will then be analysed for occurence of metabolic abnormalities in age groups and gender. Metabolic indicators will be correlated with diet and exercise habits to check if they have an effect on general metabolic health of the individual and to what degree.

b) CATEGORICAL DATA

- Which of the following sources of protein do you consume MOST often in a week?

Options (a) Red meats (b) Lean meats (c) Egg (d) Milk products (e) Vegan sources (f) Other

c) DICHOTOMOUS DATA

Have you ever been diagnosed with a non-genetic cardiovascular disease?

Options: (a) Yes (b) No

d) ORDINAL DATA

Describe the level of ease with which you might complete a 5 kilometer run.

Options: (a) Very easy (b) Comfortable (c) Comfortable but with minor injuries (d) Barely able to finish (e) Impossible to finish

e) Reasons for asking the above questions.

The type of protein source will give indications about the general food habits. Different protein sources have different Biological Values (amount of protein absorbed from total amount consumed)

c) Cardiovascular disease not caused due to genetic factors is an indicator and a culmination of long-standing metabolic syndrome. This question will also possibly show an increase in cardiovascular disease incidents with age which is expected but the progression may vary compared to similar studies done 30 or 60 years ago. This may indicate a change in average diets over time which is very relevant to our study.

The ease of completing 7 km will indicate the current physical condition of the individual. Those completing very easily or with minor injuries indicate good cardiovascular health. However the ones with minor injuries may not have optimum skeletal and joint condition due to lack of strength training or they may not be regular runners. Those that barely finish the distance may have been sedentary for a long period of time and can potentially finish the distance with some lifestyle changes. Those who cannot finish might have some underlying medical conditions. There will be significant differences over age groups as well as gender.
