Explanation / Answer

magnifying lense is nothing but converging lens

For converging lens the focal length is positive

then apply lens euqation

1/f = 1/di + 1/do

For maximum magnification the image must be formed at the near point of the eye

di = 25 cm

then do = (1/f - 1/di)^-1 = ((1/7.9)-(1/25))^-1
do = 11.54 cm
---------------------------------------------------

magnification M = -di/do = -25/11.54 = -2.166

taking positivevalue M = 2.16
