1) Diameter of bacterium = 1 um.

radius of bacterium = half the diameter = 0.5 um. = 0.5 x 10-6 m= 0.5 x10-4 cm

volume of sphere: r³= (4/3) (3.14) (0.5 x10-4 cm)3 = 1.33 x 3.14 x 0.125 x 10-12 cm3

= 0.523 x 10-12 cm3

surface area of sphere bacterium = 4r2= 4 x 3.14 x (0.5 x 10-4cm)2 = 4 x 3.14 x 0.25 x 10-8 cm2 = 3.14 x10-8 cm2.

Surface to volume ratio: Surface area / Volume = 3.14 x10-8 cm2/0.523 x 10-12 cm3= 6 x 104 cm-1.

New surface area : old surface area + 15 (old surface area) = 16 (old surface area) = 16 x 3.14 x10-8 cm2 = 50.24 x10-8 cm2.
