Question

Use the following information to answer the next question. A group of researchers is planning an experiment to test the hypothesis that sleep deprivation decreases memory retention. All participants will have a practice session in which they memorize words. That night they will sleep in a monitored lab for a specified time that depends on their group. Then each participant will be tested on how many words they remember from the practice session. The researchers are deciding what conditions they should manipulate for the experimental group. Q3.7. The table below shows conditions for the control group and three possible experimental groups. Which experimental group should the researchers use to compare to the control group in order to test their hypothesis? Control Group Group Group 2 Group 3 Number of hours of sleep 8 hours 8 hours 4 hours 4 hours Days between practice and testing 1 day 1 day 1 day 3 days Length of practice session30 minutes 45 minutes 30 minutes 30 minutes Experimental group 1 O Experimental group 2 Experimental group3 - None of the experimental groups are appropriate for testing their hypothesis. A large group of study participants are going to come to your lab and take a concentration test. Now you must choose independent and dependent variables for your experiment.

Explanation / Answer

3.7 Experimental group 1 cannot be used to test the hypothesis because this hypothesis is related to sleep deprivation. Experimantal group 1 have 8 hours of sleep , hence not sleep deprived .

Experimental group 3 also cannot be considered to be the group that the resaerchers should focus upon. This is because they are being tested after three days of memorizing the words . There is a very good chance that they will simply forget what they have learnt in these 3 days .

So the best experimental group for testing the hypothesis will be group 2. These people will be sleep deprived and as they are tested just one da after the memorizing , chances of them forget the words will be less .

3,8) This is an example of controlled experiment , In which one of the variable is changed or controlled and the effect of it is seen on other variable .

Independent variables are the one that are being controlled . As we have to see the effects of the energy drinks on the test , we would exclude other sources of caffiene and it should be considered just before the test .

So the correct answer is - how much of the energy drink is given to the participants just before the test

3.9) Depemdent variables are those on which the effects of independent variables are tested . Here we are checking the concentration of the individuals in the test .

The best way to find out the conentration of the individual is to find the score in the concentration test.
