Question

need help in detail please help I am lost with this question. We did alab on AC fields and in this section we had to record current going through coil of wires with N (turns)= 400, 200 and 800 and we had to record the current right when the compass deflected by 45 degrees through magnetic field as shown in figure 1:

1) Compare the magnitude of the Earth’s Magnetic field in Washington, DC to the field generated by your coil in Section 3.1. To do this, we note that the Northern component of the magnetic field is 20.6µT and we used just enough current in the N-turn coil to deflect the needle 45? . Therefore, the torques due to the Earth’s magnetic field and the field generated by the coil are equal.Using Eq. 6 and your data gathered in Section 3.1, calculate the field due to the current I through N = 400 coils of wire assuming that the compass was z = 10cm away and coil’s radius is 1inch. Similarly, find the field by repeating this procedure for your data with N = 800 and N = 200. Express all three answers in units of µT.

Here is my data for section 3.1:

Compass FLUKE 117 DMM DC Power Supply CURRENT VOLTAGE A COM VR FINE COARSE FINE COARSE POWER Figure 3: Constant magnetic field from a coil of wire.

Explanation / Answer

As we have all the values of N and I
and Z = 10 cm = 0.1 m , R= 1 inch = 0.0254 m
(1) N = 400 , I = 0.181
BZ = N(uoIR2) / 2(z2+ R2)3/2 = 400*(4Pi*10-7)(0.181)(0.0254)2 /2(0.12 + 0.02542)3/2
BZ = 267.21*10-6 T =267.21 uT
(2) N = 200 , I = 0.306
BZ = N(uoIR2) / 2(z2+ R2)3/2 =200*(4Pi*10-7)(0.306)(0.0254)2 /2(0.12 + 0.02542)3/2
BZ = 225.876 uT
(3) N= 800 , I = 0.084
BZ =N (uoIR2) / 2(z2+ R2)3/2 =800* (4Pi*10-7)(0.084)(0.0254)2 /2(0.12 + 0.02542)3/2
BZ = 248.02 uT
