Question
Need help with my lab. I am using Snell's law to try and find the index of refraction of two elements, Water and then vegetable cooking oil. I measured the Angle of incidence for water which was 45 degrees, and the angle of refraction which was 32 degrees. How do I find the Index of refraction for water?
Then I did the same thing with vegetable cooking oil. My data was:
Angle of incidence: 57 degrees
Angle of refraction: 35 degrees
What would the index of refraction then be for the oil?
Thanks! I will definitely rate the best answer with the clearest explanation!
Explanation / Answer
According to the snell law we know that
the refractive index n = Sin(i)/Sin(r) where i is the angle of incidence and r is the angle of refraction
So for water we know that i = 45 and r = 32
n = Sin45/Sin32 = 1.334
Similarly for the oil
i = 57 and r = 35
For oil n = Sin57/Sin35 = 1.462
nwater = 1.334
noil = 1.462
