Question
Question 1. A mass of 10,000 kg with charge plus one is blocked against a mass of 25 kg, also with charge plus one. (Like charges repel). Nothing is moving. The blocks are released and the masses fly apart. The smaller mass goes at 2000 m/s. What is the velocity of the larger mass?
Question 2. A 50 ton tank with a shield (10^8 lbs) is shown in the figure. It is motionless. A 500 lb projectile is fired with a muzzle velocity of 3000 ft/sec. It strikes the shield, does not penetrate, but fuses with it. The tank is initially motionless.
a) What is the momentum of the combination system after fusion?
b)what is the velocity of the tank immediately after firing?
Explanation / Answer
here,
mass of block 1, m1 = 10000 kg
mass of block 2 , m2 = 25 kg
charge on block 1 = 1 C
charge on block 2 = 1 C
as the smaller mass has velocity , v2 = 2000 m/s
let the velocity of bigger mass be v1
m1 * v1 = m2 * v2
v1 = (25 * 2000) / 10000
v1 = 5 m/s
velocity of larger mass is 5 m/s
