Question

3 thapolarized light is incident upon two polaroid Siters. The first filter has its transmision asdis along upon two polaroid filters. The first filter has its transmission axis along the vertical, and the second has its transmission axis at a 30° angle from the vertical. If the initial unpolariaed light tas intonsiy 30 Watts/n', caleulate the following: (a) (20 points) The intensity of the light after going through the first polaroid fiter. Explain! (b) [20 points] The intensity of the light after the second polaroid filter.

Explanation / Answer

1)

Because a polarizer eliminates half of the EM wave, So, the intensity of the light after going through the first polarizer will be 30/2 = 15 W/m2

2)

Now, we can use Malus Law to find out the intensity after 2md polarizer

So, I = Io*cos^Q = 15*(cos(30 deg))^2 = 11.25 W/m2 <------answer
