Question

2.Provided the amplitude is sufficiently great, the human ear can respond to longitudinal waves over a range of frequencies from about 20.0 Hz to about 20.0 kHz.
(a) If you were to mark the beginning of each complete wave pattern with a red dot for the long-wavelength sound and a blue dot for the short-wavelength sound, how far apart would the red dots be?
___________ m

How far apart would the blue dots be?
__________cm

(c) Suppose you repeated part (a) in water, where sound travels at 1480 m/s. How far apart would the red dots be?
_______ m

How far apart would the blue dots be?
_________cm

Explanation / Answer

A) apply speed = frequency f* wavelength lamda

v = lamda*f

for shoreter frquency ,the wavelengthis longer(Red dot)

and for longer frequency ,the wavelength is shorter(Blue dot)

lamda_red = v/f = 343/(20) = 17.15 m

B) lamda_blue = 343/20000 = 0.01715 m = 1.715 cm

C) in water

lamda_red = 1480/20 = 74 m

lamda_blue = 1480/20000 = 0.074 m = 7.4 cm
