Question

You have a car of total mass 1233.6kg and each wheel has a mass of 16.5kg

Final Velocity 15.4m/s and Total Friction force is 7.43KN

Distance car takes to come to Rest is 19.6m

Calculate:

1) coefficient of kinetic friction between the road and the tyres.

Suppose the car had reached 15.4 m/s and then tried to take a wide bend without accelerating or braking, a bend that we can treat as a circle of radius 32.0 m. The coefficient of static friction between the wheels and the road is 0.69.

2) Show with calculation whether the car would have taken the bend safely, or would have skidded out of control.

Explanation / Answer

1) Friction force = N*mue_k

==> mue_k = Friction force/N

= 7430/(1233.6*98)

= 0.061

2) Let Vmax is maximum speed with which the car can take the turn with out skidding.

Maximum Friction force = m*vmax^2/R

N*mue_s = m*vmax^2/R

m*g*mue_s = m*vmax^2/R

==> Vmax = sqrt(mue_s*g*R)

= sqrt(0.69*9.8*32)

= 14.7 m/s

clealrly 15.7 > Vmax

so, the car would have skidded out of control.
