Question

a 0.4 kg ball is dropped from a building. it hits the ground in 2.5 second and bouncing off the floor with a velocity of 20 m/s. A) find the change in momentum of the ball B) if the contact time of the ball with the ground is 0.2 s, what is the average force acting on the ball. a 0.4 kg ball is dropped from a building. it hits the ground in 2.5 second and bouncing off the floor with a velocity of 20 m/s. A) find the change in momentum of the ball B) if the contact time of the ball with the ground is 0.2 s, what is the average force acting on the ball.

Explanation / Answer

m = mass of ball = 0.4 kg

t = time taken to hit the floor = 2.5 sec

Vi = initial velocity at the time of drop = 0 m/s

Vf = velocity of ball just before hitting the floor

Using the formula ::

Vf = Vi + at

Vf = 0 + (-9.8) (2.5)

Vf = -24.5 m/s

velocity just after hitting the floor = Vf' = 20 m/s

change in momentum = m (Vf' - Vf) = (0.4) (20 - (-24.5)) = 17.8 kgm/s

b)

Using the formula

F t = change in momentum

F = force

F (0.2) = 17.8

F = 89 N
