Question

Question 12 of 15 Map sapling learning A 5.89-mm-high firefly sits on the axis of, and 10.9 cm in front of, the thin lens A, whose focal length is 5.15 cm. Behind lens A there is another thin lens, lens B, with focal length 27.9 cm. The two lenses share a common axis and are 57.1 cm apart. ls the image of the firefly that lens B forms real or virtual? O Virtua Real How far from lens B is this image located (expressed as a positive number? Number cm What is the height of this image (as a positive number)? Number Is this image upright or inverted with respect to the firefly? O Upright O Inverted A Previous Check Answer Next Exit Hint

Explanation / Answer

apply for convex lens -1/f = 1/u + 1/v

u = oject distance,

v= image distance

and f = focal length

magnifiication m = -(v/u) =y'/y ) =y'/y

v = uf/(u-f)

v = 10.9 * 5.15/( 10.9-5.15)

v = 9.76 cm

so magnification m = -v/u = -9.76/10.9   = 0.895

image from lens B will be a virtual image

image is located at 9.76 cm

hieght of the image y' = 0.895 * 5.89 = 5.27 mm

as m is -ve, this must be an inverted image
