Drug action: These drugs bind with the opioid receptors in the brain, spinal cord and other parts of the body thus reducing sending the pain messages to the brain to reduce pain sensation.

Serious adverse effects: addiction, anxiety, irritability.
Patient teaching: Around the clock dosage to be given. Don't change or stop taking the drug without physician consent. The drug should be weaned off before stopping. There will be drug interactions with antidepressants, alcohol, antibiotic and sleeping pills.
