Kwashiorkor is a malnutrition disease caused due to inadequate intake of nutrients including protein combined with existing infection or any other disease. Kwashiorkor patient suffers abnormal absorption which makes the body swell, chronic liver disorder, kidney disorder, muscular wasting, and diarrhea. Skin becomes dry and scaly.

Marasmus patient suffers loss of adipose tissue (due to fat deficiency) from the areas that store fat - buttocks and thigh, muscular wasting, dry and flaccid skin. The patient looks very underweight with a flaccid body and thin limbs. The ribs and rest of the skeleton make a distinct impression under the skin due to lack of any fat tissue.
The characteristics of marasmus include the following
Weight loss is severe
Body appears too skinny with visible bones due to muscle wasting
Significant impairment in growth (less than 60% of normal weight for age)
Onset is gradual
Marasmic-kwashiorkor is a mixed form of both marasmus and kwashiorkor and it is a very serious condition and are classified as forms of severe acute malnutrition.
Occurrence:
Kwashiorkor appears in children.
