In the figure, we must apply a force of magnitude 80.0 N to hold the block stationary at x = -3.0 cm. From that position, we then slowly move the block so that our force does +8.0 J of work on the spring

In the figure, we must apply a force of magnitude 80.0 N to hold the block stationary at x = -3.0 cm. From that position, we then slowly move the block so that our force does +8.0 J of work on the spring a block system; the block is then again stationary. What are the block's positions? ((a) positive and (b) negative)

Explanation / Answer

Hooke's law gives, F = kx

The spring constant is, k = 83 / 0.03 = 2766.67 N/m

The energy is,

      E = 0.5k (x^2 - (0.03)^2)

       8 = 0.5* 2766.67 (x^2 - (0.03)^2)

Hence, the positions are, x = +0.08175 m and x = -0.08175 m

                                                              (or)

                                          x = +8.175 cm and x = -8.175 cm
