Question

Ethan has a Mission Impossible to perform. His team must break into KGB Headquarters and steal some top secret document. He determines that they can't break in from the ground because the first floor is patrolled by too many guards. He therefore devises an alternate plan. He parachutes from a helicopter onto the roof, where he rigs up a system of pulleys, lowering one of them to the ground. He then lowers himself gently to the ground with one rope, using his weight to raise his other two team members, Henry and Harry, to the fourth floor where they can break in. Note that the rope consists of three sections from left to right. The first section he uses to lower himself to the ground. It drapes over a pulley fixed to the roof. A second pulley rides freely on the rope between sections two and three. The third section is fixed firmly to the roof. Harry and Henry hold onto the free-riding pulley which raises them to the fourth floor as Ethan falls to the ground. Ethan, with all his gear on, has a mass of 122.4 kg. Henry and Harry, with all their gear on, have a mass of 104.3 kg, each. a. Ethan is trained to be able to survive jumping from a height of 3.00m. If the building is 7 stories, and each story is 3.10 m, will he survive the fall from the roof? (Be sure to show detailed calculations to verify your answer, and explain why your calculations give you the answer to the question.) b. When Ethan reaches the ground, will he be able to hold onto the rope until Henry and Harry make their way through the window, without their weight pulling him up again? Note that together, their mass is much greater than his. (Again, show detailed calculations to verify your answer.)
