Question

Make a table and then plot the surface densities estimates for each of the eight planets. You will need to look up some numbers either in your text or on-line (cite your reference). In your table the first column should be the planet’s name, the second column should be the semi-major axis of the orbit (a) in meters, the third column should be the mass of the planet in kilograms, and the fourth column should be the surface density which you can (roughly) estimate as: [planet mass]/[pi(a)^2]. Make a plot of the log (base 10 is always used unless your are told otherwise) of the surface density versus the log of the average distance from the Sun a . Use different colours or symbols for the Terrestrial planets and for the Giant Planets. These are data points – there is no reason to connect the symbols with lines. Then discuss your result, with reference to the structure of the early Solar System disk. Describing the plot is not a discussion.

Explanation / Answer

The Plot between the log of densties and log of distances of planets from the sun.

The red dots represent the Giant planets such as Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.

The blue dots represent the Terrestrial planets.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The structure of early solar system disk contained only 0.2% of the solar mass, which the particles move in circular orbits. The disk rotated continuously which prevented the further collapse of the matter.

The present solar system is formed by the process of accretion, which are formed by the sticking of the flakes and dust to make up the larger particles which in turn attracted the more solid particles.

The plot makes it clear that the differentiation of the eight planets, which are at various distances from the sun and having different densities. This is not the case at the early stage of formation of solar disk.
