Question
Answer following questions about the displacement, velocity and acceleration from this graph of position versus time.
For questions c through g, choose answers from: 0-5 s; 5-10 s; 10-15 s; 15-20 s; >20 s)
a) Average velocity from 0-10 sec is ______ m/s
b) Instantaneous velocity at 3 s is ______ m/s
c) Over which time spans is velocity constant ______?
d) Over which time spans is velocity positive _____?
e) Over which time spans is velocity negative _____?
f) Over which time spans is velocity changing _____?
g) Over which time spans is acceleration occurring _____?
Explanation / Answer
a)average velocity = total distance/total time =-20/10=-2 m/s
b)instantaneous velocity at 3s=slope of graph at t=3s=0 m/s
c)slope gives velocity so when slope is 0 means velocity is zero when slope is positive means velocity is positive when slope is negative means velocity is negative.
velocity is constant between 0-5 sec,5-10 sec,10-15 sec ,20-25 sec
d)at 15-20 sec ,slope is positive so velocity is positive
e)at 5-10 sec slope is negative so velocity is negative
f)at 15-20 sec ,slope is continuously changing so velocity is changing
g)velocity is changing at 15-20 sec so acceleration is occuring at this time span only
