Question

The washtub bass shown in the picture consists of a string tied to a pole. Changes in pitch are created by moving the pole, thus stretching the string and, therefore, increasing its tension. (The washtub acts as a resonator, amplifying the sound produced when plucking the string.) As a member of the folk band Spherical Chicken Pluckers, you have made your own washtub bass with ordinary household items and a bass string, which you can assume acts like an ideal spring of force constant 555 lb/in. The washtub bass cannot be played if the musician must have unreasonable arm strength. Calculate the minimum force you would need to apply to sweep the pole an angle 2.75o with respect to the vertical. (See bottom figure.) Assume you apply the force horizontally and at the point where the string is attached to the pole. Also assume the tension in the string is originally 80.5 lb, typical of a bass instrument.
