Question

The circuit shown in the figure below, called the Wheatstone bridge, is used to determine the value of unknown resistor X by comparison with three resistors M, N, and P whose resistances can be varied. For each setting, the resistance of each resistor is precisely known. With switches K1 and K2 closed, these resistors are varied until the current in the galvanometer G is zero; the bridge is then said to be balanced.

(a) If the galvanometer G shows zero deflection when M = 923.0 , N = 16.00 , and P = 33.48 , what is the unknown resistance X?

Explanation / Answer

wheatstone bridge condition

X/P = M/N

X = MP/N

given :

M = 923

N = 16

P = 33.48

X = 1931.3775 ohm
