Question

I'm getting different ones than I should: a.) should be 9.8 N b.) should be 6.26 m/s
mass 1P The puck is attached to a cable that passes through a hole in frictionless table. The other end of the cable is attached to a hanging weight of 1 kg. The air puck is moving in a circular path on the table so that the hanging weight will remain motionless. See diagram below. (a) Find the tension in the cable, (b) Name the force that is causing the air puck to move in a circle. (c) What is the velocity of the puck? 7

Explanation / Answer

(a) Tension in the string is weight of 1 kg

T = 1x9.8 =9.8 N

(b) Centripetal force (tension force due to weight of the 1 kg object)

(c) T =mv2/r

v = (Tr/m )1/2

v = (9.8x1/0.25)1/2

v = 6.26 m/s
