Question

You construct a mobile out of four objects, a sphere, a pyramid, an ellipsoid, and a cube. The mobile is in equilibrium in the configuration shown below, where the vertical dashed lines are 20 cm apart. The mass of the strings (in blue) and rods (in red) can be neglected. If the pyramid has a mass of 480 g, what is the mass of each of the other objects? See if you can do this problem without a calculator. What is the mass of the ellipsoid? What is the mass of the cube? What is the mass of the sphere?

Explanation / Answer

480 g is wt of pyramid so also mobile + ellipsoid

Wt of mobile is 3times (you can see torque is equally applied but mobile is 3 times nearer hanging)

so sllipsoid Wt = 120 g

mobile = 360g

sum of all these = 960

so mass of sphere = 960*3/2

=1440
