Question

The two masses shown in the figure are each initially 1.80 m above the ground, and the massless frictionless pulley is fixed 4.8 m above the ground. (mA- 1.5 kg and mB = 3.1 kg.) what maximum height does the lighter object reach after the system is released? [Hint: First determine the acceleration of the lighter mass and then its velocity at the moment the heavier one hits the ground. This is its "launch" speed. Assume the mass doesn't hit the pulley. Ignore the mass of the cord.] the ground. This is its "launch 4.8 m 1.8 m

Explanation / Answer

Here ,

let the launch speed of the lighter block is u

Using conseravtion of energy

0.5 * 1.5 * u^2 + 0.5 * 3.1 * u^2 = 9.8 * 1.8 *(3.1 - 1.5)

solving for u

u = 3.5 m/s

Now, height above the launch point , ho = u^2/(2g)

ho = 3.5^2/(2 * 9.8)

ho = 0.625 m

maximum height = 1.8 + 0.625

maximum height = 2.425 m

the maximum height which the lighter block will rise is 2.425 m
